Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 4" to 3" Conversion Kit and what does it include?
The 4" to 3" Conversion Kit lets you retrofit an existing 4" recessed housing with a 3" aperture - no ceiling demolition required. It includes a screw-in mud plate, a Light Module, and a trim. All variants use a recessed (mud-in) trim finish.
Who is the 4" to 3" Conversion Kit for?
Homeowners and contractors who want to replace a 4" fixture with a smaller, more refined 3" aperture without replacing the housing or cutting new holes. It is ideal for remodels where downsizing the aperture size is the goal.
What does the mud plate do?
The mud plate screws into the existing housing and reduces the opening to a 3" aperture. It is finished flush with joint compound - the same process as any mud-in trim - so the result is a clean, seamless aperture with no visible hardware.
What trim styles are available?
All variants of the 4" to 3" Conversion Kit use a recessed mud-in (trimless) trim finish. Curved and Round shapes are available. For an exposed trim look, see the Remodel Can Recessed Light instead.
How does the 4" to 3" Conversion Kit install?
Screw the mud plate into the existing housing. Connect the module to the housing's wiring. Set the mud-in frame flush and finish with joint compound. No housing replacement or additional ceiling cutting is needed.
Do I need an electrician?
If the existing housing is already wired, the install is DIY-friendly. The mud-in finishing step is a drywall task. If you are wiring a new housing from scratch, a licensed electrician should handle that step.
Is the Conversion Kit dimmable?
Yes. The included module is fully dimmable with any LED-rated dimmer.
Is the module replaceable?
Yes. The module snaps out and swaps independently - the mud plate, housing, and wiring stay in place.
